Nothing lasts forever

This case by Russell Blanchard (using the excellent skills of Sally at Walton Dental Arts) shows how much the aesthetics of veneer work has moved on and also reminds us that when we fit any work there will always come a time when we will need to replace it. The veneers shown at the start of the case had been in place for 20 years so represent very successful work but had become stained and did not give an ideal smile. Over two treatment visits Russell was able to remove the old veneers and make provisional ones which stayed in place for 3 weeks while the new ones were being made. The provisional ones are made from a wax version of the intended smile so the patient is able to try the new smile out before the final restorations are made. This gives them a chance to request any changes they would like ensuring a pleasing result.

The Inman Aligner in action

This case illustrates the effectiveness of the Inman Aligner when used to resolve moderate crowding of the front 4-6 teeth. The removable aligner was worn for just under 3 months for at least 20 hours a day and some small adjustments were made to the contacts between the teeth to help create the space needed to line the teeth up. The teeth are then held in place with a fixed arch wire or fibre splint to ensure that they do not relapse. The work was done by Russell Blanchard who has gained great experience in this technique over the past 18 months.

A great immediate replacement

This case is  by Russell Blanchard and used the great skill of Robin Snell at Pyramid Dental Laboratory to make the fibre reinforced bridge.

The front tooth that needed replacing was loose and had drifted out of line. It had also become acutely infected. There was no chance of saving it and it needed removal. Clearly the patient did not want to have a gap at the front of her smile so Russell took impressions and photos that he sent to the Robin to help him make the bridge look as authentic as possible. Once the bridge was made (about 2 weeks later) the tooth was extracted and the bridge fitted immediately afterwards. This way the patient was able to leave the surgery with their smile intact. The final photo shows the bridge after it has been in place for a couple of weeks. The gum has healed beautifully around it making it look entirely natural. So long as the bridge is kept clean and is not overloaded in any way it will stay in place for many years.

Too much talk; not enough pictures

I have been doing way too much talking on this site recently and have not been putting up any pretty pictures. So to amend this I thought I would show you a simple treatment from this afternoon -a direct white filling to restore a broken tooth. The case shown here was completed in 1 visit (of approximately 45 minutes clinical time) and did not require local anaesthetic or significant adjustment to the tooth before or after treatment. It really is a joy to work in a job where I get to help people out and enjoy a bit of gentle sculpting at the same time.

As ever, if you would like information on how we may be able to help you with a particular dental problem then please do not hesitate to call the surgery on 01580 752202 and we will be happy to help.
